Summary
Lieut Col James Neill arrived from Benares on 11 June with a detachment of Madras Fusiliers and entered the fort. Taking command, the next day Neill bombarded the rebels and drove them from the town. This opened the way Major Stevenson with another detachment of Fusiliers to reach Allahabad. Then began a systematic campaign of attacking and burning the villages where rebels were found or suspected. A policy of indiscriminate hangings was designed to terrorise the surroundings. Reinforcements arrived from Calcutta and women and children were sent downriver in two steam boats. By the end of June both Benares and Allahabad were restored to safety.
