== Summary ==
In 1756 the [[Seven Years War]] erupted in Europe which led to conflict between France and Britain in India. After the [[Recapture of Calcutta 1757|Recapture of Calcutta]], Clive determined attack the French settlement at Chandernagore. His force occupied the town surrounding the fort and siege guns were disembarked from Watson's squadron. On 23 March there was a heavy artillery duel between the British ships and the fort guns. Eventually the French asked for terms and the British occupied the fort.
