== Summary ==
The British started to strengthen the defences of [[Fort William]] because they expected a conflict with the French. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siraj_ud[Suraj-Daulah Siraj ud -Daulah]], Nawab of Bengal, saw this a a threat to his rule and demanded it should cease. He rejected the Governor's explanation and sent an army to enforce his will. Rajah Doolub Ram with 3,000 soldiers invested Cossimbazar on 22 May and the Nawab arrived with his army on 1 June. The fort was indefensible and obliged to surrender. Lieut Elliott commanding the small garrison shot himself.
