== Summary ==
Following the defeat of [[Nana Sahib]] at the [[Second Lucknow Relief]] in November 1857 and the defeat of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantya_Tope Tantia [Tatya Tope]] at the second [[Siege of Cawnpore Nov 1857|Battle of Cawpore]] in December, forces were raised to pursue the rebels north of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghaghara_River Gogra River]. [[Colonel Francis Rowcroft]] took command of the [[Sarun Field Force]] and, together with the [http://www.pdavis.nl/Mutiny.htm Naval Brigade] from HMS Pearl under [http://www.pdavis.nl/ShowBiog.php?id=733 Captain Edward Sotheby RN], won a series of victories between November 1857 and November 1858. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hope_Grant Sir James Hope Grant] took command of the trans-Gogra force, crossing the river in November 1858 and running to earth the last remaining bodies of rebels. Remnants of the rebel units took refuge in Nepal and Nana Sahib is thought to have died there.
