The Chicago-born millionaire's daughter funded and managed her own hospital unit for the French Army, L’Hôpital Chirurgical Mobile No.1, which moved location several times, including the Hospital of Evacuation 32 at Bray-sur-Somme, a dangerous location within artillery range of the front line.

Born 1878, during WW1 Leese was an Army Veterinary Surgeon on the Western Front working with horses, with a prior short period in East Africa, and later also purchased camels for the Army in Somaliland. In the late 1920s he became a British Fascist politician.
