Hopkins was an American engineer travelling in Europe, including Russia in 1914. He was in Paris at the outbreak of war and worked briefly for the American Embassy (also see account above) before he and his family and friends were evacuated to England on an American cruiser, although he subsequently briefly returned to Europe.
