Can find no account of a conflict at Trincomalee, Sri Lanka in August 1781. The town was in the hands of the Dutch who allowed the British to use the harbour. At the outbreak of war between England and Holland in 1781 the Dutch denied use of the harbour and on 11 January 1782 Admiral Sir Edward Hughes captured it.
Battles & Actions in British India 1600-1900 says it was a battle against Hyder Ali during the 2nd Mysore War. In that case maybe Trinomalai (Tiruvannamalai) is meant. I can find no reference to this either.--Sy 09:20, 22 September 2008 (PDT)
