Google Books</ref>  it was the one of the four locations of invalided European Veterans in Bengal (the others being [[Chunar]], [[Monghyr]] and [[Murshidabad|Moorshedabad]]). These men probably belonged to a Veterans' Battalion, similar to  the [[Carnatic European Veteran Battalion]] in Madras Presidency.
