A Non-commissioned officer is a military rank below that of Commissioned Officer, who received his commission from the Sovereign and below that of Warrant officer, who received his commission (warrant) from the Governor-General. It included the ranks of Serjeant and Serjeant-Major (Army) and Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer (Navy).
