Tientsin was formally opened to Great Britain and France in 1860. Between 1895 and 1900, Britain and France were joined by Japan, Germany and Russia in establishing self-contained concessions in Tientsin  each with its own prisons, schools, barracks and hospitals. Tientsin was captured by the rebels during the [[3rd China War|Boxer Rebellion]] in 1900 and subsequently recaptured by the Western allies.
