The [[India Office Records]] (IOR) records held at the [[British Library]] show that a light railway operating on a cart road between [[Cuddalore]] and [[Salem]] was first suggested in 1854-5. See ‘Records’ below.
 
No evidence has been found that this  project was adopted.
 
The [[South Indian Railway]](SIR) connection from [[Cuddalore]] and [[Salem]] via [[Virudhachalam]] opened as a metre gauge([[Rail_gauge_#Metre_Gauge|MG]]) line after 1909.
