Hi Maureen - I don't think we need to itemise the individual holdings listed in the British Library catalogue as an interested researcher can find resources via the catalogue search bar. It just leads to unecessarily long lists of external links. 15/07/2015
Thank you for your further comments - The L/mil/17 references show up in a search on the BL catalogue so I cannot understand why you say that a researcher would not know they are amongst the India Office records. I am still not able to access the links you mention - perhaps it is a temp blip. I shall look again tomorrow. B

Hi Maureen - Just a reminder that locations pages should host a locations template. If you edit a locations article where the template is missing then it would be really good if you could add one and fill in whatever you can - there are many pages where the templates are missing. Equally if a new locations page is created then a template should be added. Thanks for your help with this.  Beverly 13 August 2015
HI Maureen - Thank you for your explanation.  Looking back on the Locations Project pages it makes no mention of templates being added only by a moderator. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/FibiwikiProject_Locations I should have thought that anyone adding a location page should follow the described format. However, I shall check with Valmay and come back to you on this. Best wishes Beverly 14 August 2015
Hi again _ Valmay confirmed that infoboxes should be added to locations pages by the page creator. It would also be useful if we could add them when we edit a page and notice they have been previously missed. Instructions are at http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Location_Infobox. You will note we have a new volunteer assisting with the locations project. She is still learning how to add information. Many thanks and best wishes Beverly 17 August 2015

New articles

Hi Maureen. Here are those links (so that you can access them quickly):

Sarahb 08:44, 2 June 2009 (PDT)

Lawrence schools

I thought that you had added enough info now to warrant these having their own page. I have titled it Lawrence Military Asylum with redirects from Lawrence School, Lawrence College etc. Sarah 11:39, 17 November 2009 (PST)

Tibet Expedition

Hi Maureen. Thanks for adding the review of the Charles Allen book to my Tibet Expedition page. Do you think we should have the review in the external links and the book itself under the heading Recommended Reading? If you do, I will be happy to change it.

The expedition was a fascinating saga and the letters of Capt. Mainprise are really vivid. I wish we could find some images to add. The one I found was shot down by Sarah as copyright. There are many war pages which could benefit from a contemporary photo. Regards.--Sy 07:18, 11 December 2009 (PST)

Date/time

Maureen, you can tinker with the time zone settings by going to 'my preferences' (top right of window), then selecting 'Date and time'. Server time is the current UK time. However, I've just noticed from previewing my comment that the time is wrong for me too, so there must be a problem with the wiki setup somewhere (as it is correct in the preferences). I'll forward to Valmay, but I don't if it is an easy fix. Sarah 06:02, 14 December 2009 (PST)

Vets

Well, how funny. I thought it must surely be a copypaste typo! I've reverted, but have left Health off as I do think it seems a bit strange in that category. You can find it in health via the IMS anyway. You should add that info into the article as it is interesting. You've probably noticed I reorganised into sections a bit like the Apothecary article. Sarah 15:48, 16 December 2009 (PST)

Non-Brit Ancestors

Was on my to do list but is now done! Sarah 13:41, 22 December 2009 (PST)

Scholars/Antiq

Please ignore the edit summary I included when restoring the article - I only read your message after doing so there fore didn't know what had happened. I can only guess that what you have done sometimes is view an old version of the article and then save it. If you are looking at a previous version and then click Edit, it will actually edit that old version that you are viewing and so when you save, any subsequent changes are reverted. To return to the current version, click Article and then it is safe to go to the Edit screen. If you are on an old version it should say "WARNING: You are editing an out-of-date revision of this page. If you save it, any changes made since this revision will be lost" at the top of the edit screen.

If this wasn't the problem we'll have to have another think. Sarah 12:35, 5 January 2010 (PST)

3rd Light Dragoons

Sorry Maureen. It seems I have jumped the gun again. I'll have a search to see what I can dig up on a separate regiment.--Sy 02:07, 7 January 2010 (PST)

Historical books online

Hi Maureen. Could you please use the following format/layout when adding historical books online.

Many thanks --FIBIS Webmaster 06:32, 11 January 2010 (PST)

I don't think we need add further instructions on how to link or format correctly as most of it is covered in the help section and it hasn't been a problem in the past. If you are unsure on how to add something please feel free to ask me or look at other pages as a guide. If you want a more detailed manual of style then you could try reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style If you think this is a better guide we could add it to our help section. We are always looking for ways to improve and appreciate any feedback. --FIBIS Webmaster 10:07, 23 January 2010 (PST)

Another reminder about linking format please Maureen. When I first started editing wikis I found it useful to visit the Special:Recentchanges page at the start of every visit to see what edits of mine had been altered and why. It's a great way to learn from your mistakes and a reminder what not to do before you start editing again. I still make mistakes, but luckily Sarah notices them for me! ;-) --FIBIS Webmaster 10:07, 23 January 2010 (PST)
If I understand your message correctly, you can't understand why on the Madras Native Infantry page I didn't change the historical books link when I had changed it in two other places? The answer to that is that I missed it, but have amended it now. Many thanks. FIBIS Webmaster 07:46, 26 January 2010 (PST)

22nd Light Dragoons

Well spotted Maureen. The History suggests that this link was put on by Valmay in September 2007. I have substituted the Wikipedia link.--Sy 04:48, 13 January 2010 (PST)

Biographies

I suggest these general biographies could be put on the war pages as well as any special Military Biography page. I have already started adding links to the Dictionary of Indian Biography to war pages.--Sy 06:28, 19 January 2010 (PST)

I agree with Sy that the books can be placed on articles covering topics that the books treat in depth, such as a particular war. Additionally, if they change regiments a lot and therefore have no 'main' regiment, a book could always be placed on the relevant army page (if it appears to be general enough). The Welsh book will be fine on the Madras army page. The Price book clearly belongs on Scholars, but quite a detailed read might be needed to establish another place. I am going to make a Commander-in-Chief page that the Roberts book can also be added to. Sarah 12:31, 20 January 2010 (PST)

Polygar Wars

I've moved the info over to article pages. Sarah 06:03, 21 January 2010 (PST)

Botanists

Hi Maureen. It will be fairly obvious, but I have moved your botanists to their own article as there were so many they seemed to warrant it. Also, most of them certainly seemed to be better known as botanists/naturalists. Sarah 14:47, 2 February 2010 (PST)

Singapore

Hi Maureen, am just wondering about some of the SMJ articles you've added to Singapore. I can't check them myself at the moment as for some reason the pdfs are crashing my browser, but would you think they are all relevant in a family history sense? I can see why some of the hospital articles might be, but smallpox vaccination? Sarah 15:54, 8 February 2010 (PST)

I wonder if it might be an idea to link those you think the most useful and then put a general link to the search feature (is there one?) explaining that there are a number of articles available on medicine/health/hospitals/etc in early Singapore. You have done that elsewhere to good effect. What do you think? Sarah 13:10, 9 February 2010 (PST)

Bacsa Calcutta

Hi Maureen, thanks for letting me know it is a work in progress. Sy often does that by noting something like 'Temporary Save' in the edit summary.

I wonder if, rather than spend a lot of your time adding the BACSA records in, it might be more convenient to link to their Search database. Calcutta starts on India Main List page 5, or here. Sarah 12:26, 14 February 2010 (PST)

I think the BACSA Search is a fairly recent development. The links seem fine to me. Sarah 12:09, 15 February 2010 (PST)

Railway Regts

Hi Maureen. No need to worry about adding that new Railway Regiments category to articles missing it. I am still going through the volunteer regiments so will do that as I go along. Have decided to scrap the category system I started before, now that I understand things better, so have many, many pages to recategorize already! Sarah 14:18, 9 March 2010 (PST)

Apothecary

Hi Maureen - I'm wondering if we should split the Apothecary article as it is getting incredibly long. My initial thought is to remove the individuals section into its own page. What do you think? Sarah 07:08, 19 March 2010 (PDT)

Forums/Message boards/ELs

Hi there Maureen, I have removed a couple of links to forum postings as I think such should only be linked to in very exceptional cases as they are not always the most reliable of sources. Also threads can disappear, meaning the links aren't always that stable. I suppose an exceptional case would be a thread of photos.

External links should really be to sites that contain significant content rather than brief mentions of the subject, otherwise the really good sites that we find to link to can get a bit lost in a long list.

I also wrote up a couple of things you added as external links as I thought they sat better amongst the main body of the articles, both for different reasons. The Percy Morris oral history is a great site and I wanted to emphasise and expand the quote you found (quotes are a bit long for an external link - better written up into the article with a reference). The info on 'Lumsden's Lambs' seemed like it should be in a section on the battalion's service, as the volunteers seeing active service is quite notable. As the two historical books were just added for one or two pages, those sources seemed better as a footnote. Sarah 16:02, 7 April 2010 (PDT)

13th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry

Hello Maureen, I can't get the link to the "The History of the Indian Mutiny, Volume 2 by Charles Ball, 1858, page 92 available on the Digital Library of India website, computer page 101" to work. It gives me blank pages. What am I doing wrong?--Sy 08:26, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I clicked the download Alternatiff button and it said that it is already installed on my browser. All I can see is some very large devanagari script. If I use the arrows I get very large type which I can't reduce. If I type 101 into the page number box, it reverts to 1 of. Does this only work with Internet Explorer? If so, that bars us Mac users.--86.138.127.125 13:23, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Unattached list

Hi Maureen,

Re: this addition ext links - India list post - I feel that although we cannot copy the bulk of the email (copyright being with Roots), we can add Peter's list of sergeant types to the article (and footnote "Peter Bailey, list post link" for good measure in this case). Funnily, there will be a road sergeant and brief explanation of in the forthcoming Journal so we will be able to note that there eventually.

2nd Maratha War

Should we have the reference to Sharpe at 4th Mysore War on this page? It is Seringapatam or Srirangapatnam by the way. Regards --Sy 14:09, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Taku Forts

Hi Maureen. The titles of the articles were rationalised early last year. I have now changed the links on the location page. --Sy 13:32, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Colaba

Hello Maureen. The Colaba on our location page is Kolaba Fort not Colaba, Mumbai. I have moved your link to the churches section of Bombay (City) and changed the Colaba page to Colaba Fort for clarity. Regards.--Sy 17:38, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Operations in Waziristan

Hello Maureen. I am aware of the date discrepancy but I don't have the right to change /move the titles of Categories. I will ask Valmay to do it.--Sy 08:14, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Turns out you can't re-title a category. So I have made a new one without the dates and moved all the articles over.--Sy 11:46, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Elephants

Great article Maureen.--Sy 11:46, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Reginald Malpas Gore

The details were given to us by the son David Gore. The captions are those written on the photos by Reggie Gore. David can't elucidate. I think you are right about Niffs but hesitate to put it without proof. A "working stiff" is an American term for a hardworking man but I doubt the term is US or Aussie. My guess is that it was an alternative for "chap". Regards--Sy 12:15, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

History of the Corps of Royal Engineers

Hello Maureen. I noticed you added this volume to the pages of the HEIC Sappers and Miners. As it only covers the Royal Engineers, should it be attached to them? I have created a new page for Corps of Royal Engineers and attached it there. Cheers.--Sy 14:36, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

De Meuron Regiment

Thanks Maureen. I am fairly confident that the images are public domain so I have added them to our page. Regards--Sy 16:08, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

People by Occupation

I see you are adding this category to the articles in the Occupations category. These are not articles on people (there is a separate category for people). I don't see what the new category adds. Perhaps you should check with the administrators. Regards--Sy 12:40, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Journal cover pic

Hi Maureen, I'm afraid we cannot use that scan of the Journal cover as the license we have from the BL (who own the picture) does not extend to website usage. Sarah 09:10, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I know you didn't upload that cover pic, it's just we can't use it bigger than thumbnail size. The covers in the shop cannot be used on the wiki as we are only allowed to upload small, poor quality scans which we can use under the terms of 'fair usage' to advertise a Journal for sale (like we can with the other book covers). There are copyright images on the front of most Journals and our license means we cannot use that picture anywhere else. By the way, thanks for going through all of those uncategorized images. It's very helpful. Sarah 10:22, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Maureen - I removed the book about Simla as I feel, without a personal review, this constitutes advertising. Beverly

Re Simla - To address your queries. FMP is a site that hosts transcriptions and digitised images of actual records not an author's representation. The RSS feed is a news feed and gives various information - including relevant local events. We have had opportunity to look at the member's book so it is not an unknown. Hope this helps Beverly

Re Simla - Oops! Many apologies Maureen. Text removed in error - reinstated. Hope all as it should be now. Beverly

Great work

Hi Maureen
I have been rather out of circulation, what with moving house and daughter getting married, and haven't done much on the Fibiwiki in the last few months. I have now been able to look at recent changes and realise that you have done a huge amount of work on the Military Project. The articles are really a wonderful source of information. Thanks for making such a significant contribution. Regards --Sy 08:06, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Madras (City)

Hi Maureen

When I tried the access the three volumes of Vestiges of Old Madras the links didn't work. Could you check it isn't just me.

Regards--Sy 08:27, 17 January 2013 (PST)

Medical Service etc

Thanks, Maureen. I had a feeling there was a difference but was adding so many bits and pieces that I didn't have time to investigate further (that's why I flagged it up in the edit summary). I will defer it back to Peter for a definition so it can be corrected. Sarah (talk) 23:23, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Apothecary

Thanks for this. I agree with your point about orderly not really being appropriate. Please amend the quick definition as you see fit - these additions are a glossary that Peter has provided and I am sure that he would agree that as you have looked into apothecaries in depth, you are well placed to give the most accurate definition. I think it is handy to have the quick def though, as the page is really very detailed. Sarah (talk) 20:08, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Bangalore Cemeteries

Dear Maureen - I rolled back the edit on the Banglaore cemeteries as the page already contained links to those FIBIS images under Hosur Road. Beverly 6/3/2014

NainiTal

I removed an external link to an image held amongst the fibiwiki images already linked to the Naini Tal page. Many locations will now have images both within the wiki and also the gallery so best check those before linking (especially where image is that of a FIBIS trustee!) http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/File:Brewery_Camp.jpg. Life In India

Hi Maureen - Thank you for your message. The external links guidelines should be strictly considered - links not adhering to these will be removed. In particular archived websites may have been taken down by the author of that site for a good reason - in fact, many have poor display. Personal photographs fall under the same criteria. Best wishes Beverly 10 June 2015

Additional Comment - I am not sure to which edits you refer. However, having had a further glance I can see that the whole article "Life in India" has been earmarked for a cleanup so I shall go through it gradually and tidy ...there are many links to check! Beverly 10 June 2015
