Sutlej Valley Project Railways

The ‘Sutlej Valley Project’ was a massive undertaken by the Government of India between 1921 and 1933. It required the construction of a dam to the River Indus with its associated headworks and a network of canals.

The Nalagarh Quarry was used again to provide sandstone for the various constructions. In an address to the Punjab Engineering Congress in 1923 it seems that the Nalagarh Quarry had been abandoned after each of the two previous uses.

The Doraha-Nalagarh Railway was a new broad gauge(BG) line built from Doraha to the quarries at Nalagarh [1]. This apparantly followed the line of the Rupar-Nalagarh Provincial State Railway, in use from 1883-c.1885; and then the Sutlej River Training Works Railway, 1915-16 both of which had been dismantled.
