Originally part of the [[Calcutta and South Eastern Railway]], a private Company that was taken into Government ownershgip in 1868.

The broad gauge([[Rail_gauge#Broad_Gauge|BG]]) line was constructed in 1862-63 to handle traffic from the opening of [[Port Canning]] as an auxiliary harbour to [[Calcutta]], but the failure of Port Canning involved the railway in its ruin.

Canning Branch Railway

Originally part of the Calcutta and South Eastern Railway, a private Company that was taken into Government ownershgip in 1868.

The broad gauge(BG) line was constructed in 1862-63 to handle traffic from the opening of Port Canning as an auxiliary harbour to Calcutta, but the failure of Port Canning involved the railway in its ruin. [1]

The railway was absorbed into East Bengal Railway(EBR) becoming the Canning Branch Railway.
