1773 HC/CL/JO/8/136-7 Regulating Act Under this Act, the governor of fort william was given primacy over other presidencies. He was designated as 'Governor General and Council of the Presidency of Fort William in Bengal'. A four member Council was appointed by parliament to assist the Governor General.

1786     A supplementary the Bill to Pitt's India Act for regulating the trial of persons who commit offences in the East Indies. Lord Cornwallis was appointed as the first Governor-General, and he then became the effective ruler of British India under the authority of the Board of Control and the Court of Directors.
