states 'the railway line from Madras to Tuticorin, covering a distance of 444 miles, was laid way back in 1880 by the erstwhile South Indian Railway Company during the British Raj.'

Both [[Vriddhachalam]] and [[Cuddalore]]  are on the main SIR line between [[Tuticorin]] ( today called Thoothukudi) and [[Madras]] (Chennai). So this would support the conclusion that the Vriddhachalam-Cuddalore Railway was constructed by SIR c.1880.

The railway was worked by [[South Indian Railway]](SIR) in 1933<ref name=name/>

Vriddhachalam-Cuddalore Railway also recorded as the Cuddalore-Vriddhachalam Railway, 35 miles(56km), opened 1928 by South Indian Railway(SIR) from Cuddalore to Vriddhachalam [1]

The line from Cuddalore Old Town to Wharf, 1½ Miles(2.4km), which had opened 1899, listed in the 1918 Report was probably absorbed into this line [2]

Records

Refer to FIBIS Fact File #4: “Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947” - available from the Fibis shop. This Fact File contains invaluable advice on 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the India Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [3] gives the following: -

  • L/L/F/7/2601 “Collection 400/8: South Indian Railway: Contract for working of Shoranur-Nilambur, Salem-Metur Dam and Vriddhachalam-Cuddalore Lines; 1931-33"
  • L/F/8/20/1774 “South Indian Railway Company Limited, Contract as to working of Shoranur-Nilambur Line, Salem-Metur-Dam Line and Vriddhachalam-Cuddalore Line; 1933"
