Cawnpore Sugar Works Ltd Railways
The 'Cawnpore Sugar Works Ltd' was incorporated in 1894 by Begg, Sutherland & Co. They operated at a number of sites [1] :-
- 'Cawnpore Sugar Factory', Cawnpore, opened 1896.
- 'Marhaura Sugar Refinery',(c.300km south-east of Cawnpore), opened 1904. There was a 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) railway at this site [2]
- 'Padrauna Sugar Factory', (c.430km east of Cawnpore), opened 1921
- 'Katkuiyan Sugar Factory', (c.320km north-east of Cawnpore), opened 1933
The records show that there was a 2 km branch of metre gauge(MG) line connecting to the mainline, together with two MG locomotives dated 1915 and 1923. The location and details are unclear [1].
The records also show thar there were a significant number of 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) dating 1916-1925 but the location is not clear [1].
