Chronology

  • 1803 raised as 2nd Battalion 21st Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1824 became 42nd Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1842 became 42nd Bengal Native (Light) Infantry
  • 1861 became 5th Bengal Native (Light) Infantry
  • 1885 became 5th Bengal (Light) Infantry
  • 1903 became 5th Light Infantry
  • 1922 disbanded

In 1861 after the mutiny, when the regiment was renamed the 5th Bengal Native (Light) Infantry, the 1st Assam Light Infantry took the title and later became 42nd Gurkha Rifles.
