A zone of Indian Railways (IR), Central Railway was formed on 5 November 1951 from the merger of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway, the Dholpur State Railway and the Scindia State Railway.
In 1966, parts of CR were combined with portions of Southern Railway to form the ninth zone of IR, South Central Railway.
