On 15 January 1958, North Eastern Railway was split into two zones, with what had been the [[Assam Railway]] and the [[Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway]] becoming Northeast Frontier Railway, and the remainder left as North Eastern Railway.

A zone of Indian Railways (IR), formed on 14 April 1952 from the merger of the Oudh and Tirhut Railway, the Assam Railway and the Kanpur-Achnera section of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway.
