Chronology

  • 1776 raised for the Vizier of Oude
  • 1777 commanded by Captain Thomas Naylor
  • 1778? incorporated in HEIC service as the 29th Battalion of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1781 became the 29th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantryy
  • 1796 became the 2nd Battalion 9th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1824 became the 21st Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry

In the Indian Mutiny the regiment did not rebel and, in the ensuing disbandment of Bengal Army regiments, the 21st became the most senior.
