The Howrah-Burdwan Chord Railway was part of East Indian Railway(EIR) system.The line opened in 1917 and provided shorter link to Bardhaman from the East Indian Railway(EIR)EIR hub at Howrah.
Prior to the opening of the Howrah–Bardhaman chord the only line was the Sheoraphuli-Tarakeshwar Railway which had been constructed in 1885.
