- 1797 became 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
- 1824 became 23rd Regiment of Madras Native Infantry (Palamcottah Light Infantry)
- 1885 became 23rd (Wallajahbad) Madras Native (Light Infantry)
- 1901 became 23rd (Wallajahbad) Madras Light Infantry
- 1903 became 83rd (Wallajahbad) Light Infantry
- 1922 became 4th/3rd Madras Regiment
- 1923 disbanded
- 1942 re-raised
