- 1800 formed as 2nd Battalion 8th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry
- 1824 became 16th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry
- 1885 became 16th Regiment of Bombay Infantry
- 1901 became 16th Bombay Infantry
- 1903 became 116th Mahrattas
- 1922 became 4th Battalion 5th Mahratta Light Infantry
- 1947 allocated to India on Partition
