Royal Regiments are those which were under the command of H.M. Government in London (from Horse Guards).  These regiemnts are often called H.M. Regiment .... for example H.M. 63rd Foot or H.M. Regiment of Foot.
 
Most of the Royal Regiments (both infantry and cavalry) served in India at some time.
