- 1761 became the Grant Battalion under Captain Hugh Grant
- 1764 renumbered 3rd Battalion of Bengal Native Infantry
- 1765 posted to the1st Brigade
- 1775 renumbered the 2nd Battalion of Bengal Native Infantry
- 1781 became the 2nd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
- 1796 became the 1st Battalion 2nd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
- 1824 became the 5th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
- 1857 mutinied at Umballa on 23 May
