Chronology
- 1798 raised as 2nd Btn 16th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry following 1796 reorganisation when previous 16th became 2nd Btn 7th Regt
- 1824 2nd Battalion became 33rd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major J Hay
In the Indian Mutiny the regiment did not rebel and, in the ensuing disbandment of Bengal Army regiments, the 33rd became the fourth most senior.
- 1861 became 4th Bengal Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
