Summary

Following continued unrest around Kabul, the eastern Ghilzai tribes had blocked the passes on the route to India. Maj-Gen Sir Robert Sale was to march to winter quarters in Jalalabad clearing the opposition on the way. On 9 October 1841 an advance party of 35th Native Infantry under Col. Thomas Monteath left for Bootkhak followed by the 13th Foot on 11 October. Gen. Sale took the whole force forward in stages fighting actions at Boothak, Khoord-Kabul Pass and Jugdulluk and sustaining considerable losses.
