Toungoo was the headquarters of Toungoo District in the Toungoo Division of Lower Burma during the British period. It was situated on the Rangoon-Mandalay Railway, part of the Burma Railway, 166 miles from Rangoon, and 220 miles from Mandalay. Up until 1893, Toungoo was an important cantonment.
