Chronology
- 1689 raised in Enniskillen as James Wynne's Regiment of Dragoons
- 1751 formally titled the 5th Regiment of Dragoons
- 1788 renamed the 5th Royal Irish Dragoons
- 1799 suspected of treachery and disbanded
- 1858 reformed as the 5th (or Royal Irish) Regiment of Dragoons
- 1861 renamed the 5th (or Royal Irish) Lancers
- 1922 amalgamated with the 16th The Queen's Lancers to become 16th/5th Queen's Royal Lancers
- 1954 became the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers
- 1993 amalgamated with the 17th/21st Lancers to form The Queen's Royal Lancers
Service in British India
On 1 August 1874, as the regiment was returning to England, 1 sergeant and 6 men transferred to the 13th Hussars [1]
