The Southern Shan States Railway was branch of the Burma Railway(BR), 87 miles (139 km) in length.

The line was constructed shortly before the war of 1914-18 when a line was built from Thazi on the Rangoon-Mandalay section of BR to Kalaw, a hill station in the hills of the Southern Shan State [1] [2]
