Grand Chord Line (EIR)
Background
The traffic on the East Indian Railway mainline via Ranigani and Luckeesarai (previously called the First Chord Line and completed in 1871) continued to grow and it became necessary to find a shorter route [1].
History
- A fresh survey was undertaken in 1888-89 to find a direct route and after two more surveys to cut costs, a route was deterrmined from Dhanbad to Moghulsarai via Gomoh, Koderma and Gaya.
- The major works on the line were the Upper Sone Bridge, Dehri, tunneling and ghat line construction
- The line, called the 'Grand Chord' was opened by Viceroy Lord Minto on 6th December 1906 opened
- The line reduced the distance from Calcutta to North India and Bombay by 50 miles (80km) and also to Bombay. The Allahabad-Jubbulpore Railway had opened in 1867 linking to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) thus making it possible to travel directly from Bombay to Calcutta [2]. The Grand Chord Line provided capacity to deal with the increase in traffic.
