Regiment. A group of about 500 officers and soldiers under the charge of a Colonel. After 1879, in the British Army most regiments comprised two Battalions, each of 500 men or so, one under the charge of a Colonel and the other of a Lieutenant-Colonel. In theory, one Battalion was to remain in England, recruiting and training, whilst the other served abroad.
