The chronology of the original 19th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry is as follows:

  • 1764 raised in Calcutta by the Town Major under command of Captain Douglas Hill
  • 1765 ranked as the 19th Barttalion of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1775 renumbered the 20th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1781 became the 20th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Captain Grant
  • 1781 mutinied over prize money and was broken up.

Also known as the Young Battalion.

Chronology

  • 1776 raised for the Vizier of Oude under Captain Young
  • 1778? incorporated in HEIC service as the 22nd Battalion of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1781 became the 22nd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantryy
  • 1796 became the 2nd Battalion 3rd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1824 became the 19th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1857 mutinied at Berhampore on 25 February. Colonel Mitchell persuaded them to give up their arms and they were marched to Barrackpore and disbanded on 31 March.
