The Southern Shan States Railway was a metre gauge(MG) branch of the Burma Railway(BR), 87 miles (139 km) in length. [1]

The line was opened in stages from 1912 to 1914 when a line was built from Thazi on the Rangoon-Mandalay section of BR to Kalaw, a hill station in the hills of the Southern Shan State; a line length of 62 miles(99km) [2] [3].

The line was later to be extended to Yawnghwe, giving a total length of 109 miles(174km)[1].
