Godavari Dam Construction Railway
The Godavari Dam Construction Railway was one of the first railways in India, opened around 1845.
The railway was built for transporting materials for the construction of the Dowlaiswaram Anicut at Rajahmundry (which is now located in Andhra Pradesh). This was named the ‘Godavari Dam’ and was built over the Godavari River as part of the scheme to irrigate the Godavari delta around 1845.
Work on the project was started in 1845 under the direction of the Engineer-in-charge Captain Arthur Thomas Cotton of the Madras Corps of Engineers and as far as can be ascertained the railway was in use from the start of the project. The project was completed in 1852 and the railway was closed down. [1] [2]
