Summary
The immediate cause of the punitive expedition was the assassination of the British resident J.W.W.Birch Government adviser to Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah II the Sultan of Perak. An expeditionary force undwr Maj Gen The Hon. Francis Colbourne CB and Brig Gen John Ross was sent which fought a number of engagements subduing the territory which was occupied for a year.
