Canning Branch Railway
Canning Branch Railway
Originally part of the Calcutta and South Eastern Railway, a private Company that was taken into Government ownershgip in 1868.
The line was constructed in 1862-63 to handle traffic from the opening of Port Canning as an auxiliary harbour to Calcutta, but the failure of Port Canning involved the railway in its ruin.
The railway was absorbed into East Bengal Railway(EBR) becoming the Canning Branch Railway.
