The Dhond-Baramati Railway 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) railway was under construction in 1913 and owned by Central Provinces Railway Co Ltd(CPR).

The line opened in May 1914 linking Dhond to Baramati, a line length of 27 miles(43km), and it added to the prosperity of the sugarcane industry in the region. It was worked by Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR) and connected at Dhond to the GIPR mainline [1] [2] [3]

The railway came under Government of India(GoI) management from 1925.

Records

Refer to FIBIS Fact File #4: “Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947” - available from the Fibis shop. This Fact File contains invaluable advice on 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the India Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [4] gives the following: -

  • L /F/8/19/1483 “Great Indian Peninsula Railway Company, Contract for working and maintenance of a railway from Dhond to Baramati; 1920”
  • L /F/8/19/1446 “Great Indian Peninsula Railway Company, Contract for working and maintenance of a railway from Dhond to Baramati; 1920”
