  • 1798 raised as 1st Battalion, 14th Madras Native Infantry
  • 1824 became 27th Madras Native Infantry
  • 1885 became 27th Madras Infantry
  • 1903 became 87th Punjab Regiment
  • 1922 became 5th/2nd Punjab Regiment
  • 1947 allocated to India on Partition
