Canning Branch Railway
Canning Branch Railway
Originally part of the Calcutta and South Eastern Railway, a private Company that was taken into Government ownershgip in 1868.
The broad gauge(BG) line was constructed in 1862-63 to handle traffic from the opening of Port Canning as an auxiliary harbour to Calcutta, but the failure of Port Canning involved the railway in its ruin. [1]
The railway was absorbed into East Bengal Railway(EBR) becoming the Canning Branch Railway.
