Dhoraji Town Tramway

The Imperial Gazetteer of India for 1908 reports ‘Dhoraji, a fortified town in the State of Gondal, Bombay on the Bhavnager-Gondal-Junagarh-Porbander Railway, 43 miles south-west of Rajkot and 52 miles east of Porbander. A horse tramway connects the railway station with the town...’ [1]

With the arrival of the railways a new part of the Dhoraji town, between the railway station and the old town was designed using axial planning, having broad avenues, road junctions, parks, bazaars and public buildings. It is a good example of urban planning of an Indian town during British Raj [2]

The Railway was opened in the early 1880’s and railway Station Road leads directly to the old town a distance of about 1½ miles (2km). It seems most likely that the horse-drawn tram operated on this road from soon after the opening of the railway and was still in operation in 1906.

The Rajkot District Gazetteer: (1982) states Mr . Jagannath Vasanji a well - known advocate of Dhoraji started ' Horse - Tramway ' which rendered shuttle services between the town and the railway station till 1927 , when it was discontinued" snippet available https://books.google.co.uk/
