Chandernagor was formerly a French colony and is situated about 30km north of the centre of Calcutta straddling the Hugli River.
History
The French arrived in 1673. It became Bengal’s larger trading centre - bigger than neighbouring Calcutta. Its importance fell after being taken by the British. Colonel Robert Clive of Brittish East India Company Limited and Admiral Watson captured Chandannagar in the Battle of Chandernagore 1757 Control was returned to the French in 1816 where it remianed until independance.
