Bareilly', situated on the Ramganga river 812 miles northwest of Calcutta by rail, was the headquarters of Bareilly District in the Bareilly Division of United Provinces during the British period. There was a cantonment.

Bareilly was an important junction on the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway and a terminus for the metre gauge lines of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India and Rohilkund and Kumaon Railways.
