The Trichinopoly-Pudukkottai Railway was first proposed by Pudukkottai Durbar in 1906 to connect Trichinopoly with Pudukkottai and Tondi on the east coast some 83 miles(133km) away. [1]

The project was repeatedly considered and shelved. [2]

A railway linking Trichinopoly and Karaikkudi in Madura district and passing through Pudukkottai was completed in March 1926 as part of the South Indian Railway(SIR) network [3]
