EIR Personnel - Chronological Order

The following are notable -


  • William St. John Galwey; 1857, jointed EIR as Assistant Engineer. He was to have joined the staff employed on the works of the Soane Bridge, then in charge of Mr. Samuel Power, but the Indian mutiny having broken out, he could not proceed up country, and so remained for the rest of that year in the office of the Chief Engineer, George Turnbull, in Calcutta; 1858-63, Resident Engineer - construction of the EIR Jamalpur Locomotive Workshops ; 1863, survey of the EIR ‘First Chord line’; 1864, proposal for railway bridge across the River Hooghly and a terminus in Calcutta, in place of that in Howrah, the project, although approved, was not carried out; 1865, Engineer in charge of EIR Junction District including Kurraballie or Colliery branch, promoted 1867 to District Engineer; 1870, EIR Burdwan District, then Assanol engine-changing station facilities construction[1].
  • Frederick Smith Stanton Major General R.E.; 1887-92, after 27 years service with the State Railways and following his retirement as Director General of Indian Railways, served on the Board of the East Indian Railway Company, based in London [2].
