SIR Central Workshops, Golden Rock, Trichinopoly part of South Indian Railway page.

A superb description of the workshops and facilities is given in the book produced by the Southern Railway Heritage Centre "Marvels of the South Indian Railway 1859-1951" pages 96 to 116 [1]. The text below has been extracted from this book.

The South Indian Railway Central Workshops were established in 1928 at Golden Rock, about 2 miles east of Trichinopoly, they were capable of constructing and repairing both broad gauge(BG) and metre gauge(MG) Locomotives, Carriages and Wagons. The workshops covered an area of 24 acres (10ha) and the entire site 210 acres (85ha). To house the staff of the workshops a small town of about 2400 houses was constructed, together with markets, schools, places of worship, instiutes etc

In addition to the usual standard machines and plants which were being used in locomotive and carriage repair and construction work depots, special plants were installed in most of the workshops at Golden Rock. The details are given in the book with fine photographs but summarised as :-

  • Sawmill
  • Forge and Smithy Shop
  • Foundry
  • Tender and Boiler Shop
  • Machine and Fitting Shop
  • Wheel Shop
  • Erecting Shop
  • Power Station
  • Carriage Building and Repair Department
  • Yard Plant
