'''Eldred Pottinger (1811-1843)''', was an [[East India Company]] army officer and diplomatist. He became a political officer and served in Afghanistan. During the [[1st Afghan War]] he escaped from the [[Siege of Charikar]] to [[Kabul]] where he succeeded William Macnaghten as envoy to the Afghan court. He was one of the hostages taken by Akbar Khan and was eventually released.
