Eldred Pottinger

Eldred Pottinger (1811-1843), was an East India Company army officer and diplomatist. He became a political officer and served in Afghanistan. During the 1st Afghan War he escaped from the Siege of Charikar to Kabul where he succeeded William Macnaghten as envoy to the Afghan court. He was one of the hostages taken by Akbar Khan and was eventually released.
