Changes

Initially, under the East India Company, this was a junior medical orderly. Later, in the Indian Army, the title advanced to the equivalent of today's senior nurse. In 1894, the rank was abolished in the Indian Subordinate Medical Service in favour of that of Assistant Surgeon.
